 Art Deco and Industrial Design (1920’s-1939) Gina Christopher The art deco period was the brief exciting period between the two world wars. In this period there was an explosion of art deco in the United States. Art deco originally started in France after World War One. After living in functional design for a while the decorator came into being and people wanted some more spice. There was a nice focus on luxury and flashy interior design. Also, there was a feeling of celebration during this time that only art deco could describe in its style. This was a period of economic progress for the United States, which promoted this playful celebration of style for the world. The two types of art deco design include the more feminine, classical art deco style and the masculine, futuristic style. The elements of this style include exotic materials, high quality materials, hand crafted, geometric styles, ivory inlay, decorative glass, shiny surfaces, lacquered wood, and more.  Emergence of Modernism (1900’s-1950’s) Gina Christopher This design period was in between WW1 and WW2. The world was not as prosperous economically during this time and politically unrest. That is why the there are a lot of inexpensive materials used during this time and interiors/furniture were designed around the average person. Instead of wood material, designers used a lot of steel and molded plywood. The designers of this time pursued modernism purposefully during this time. Modernism emerged in Germany and looked toward the future, not the past. Industrialization was an inspiration to the key designers of this period. They also looked towards functionalism as a philosophy, meaning that designs were simply functional and not ornamental. The memorial architects of this time were Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier.
