Post Modernism / Deconstruction  Gina Christopher During this time there was a worldwide energy crisis due to the oil embargo by several Arab countries. This put the world into a recession that dwindled the hopes of the modernism movement. People lived in a “grab all you can get” attitude due to the hard times. Moving into the 1980’s there were large homes built and a lot of overdoing. In the 90’s there was a rise of the environmentalist. These people were concerned about the over materialism the world was going and advocating for the planet. Also, during this time the portable telephone and computers were on a rise, so communication was extended. The style of furniture during this time was not produced to be functional but rather a talking point. Also, injection molding manufacturing contributed to a lot of the style during this period. Office design was also a focal point of this period. Offices changed their layouts and development more diverse operations.  My favorit...

Modernism in America (pt.2) Gina Christopher The 1950’s was a time for exploration in furniture design. Furniture of this time was made out of molded plywood, fiberglass, plastic, and aluminum. This is due to the philosophy during this time that good quality furniture can also be affordable for the masses. There were two companies during this time that were the producers of all this furniture: Herman Miller and Herman Miller and Knoll. These companies were all the rage during this time period. Also during this time there was a high push to encourage human movement within furniture design, instead of designing based on perpendicular lines. These were created due to the invention of the television, and making people feel most comfortable while watching  television.  My Favorite design/ fu...

Modernism in America America was a world leader, economically, during this point in time. Many pioneers of modernism ended up fleeing their homelands and came and taught/developed design in the United States. Around the 1950’s design optimism was on a rise. During this time many new home owners were seeking furnishings, which led to a rise for furniture production and design. Also, media such as the tv helped give people more options for interior design and decoration. The modernist movement in this period is more playful and colorful than the emergence of modernism.   My favorite designs/ architecture/ furniture  Glass House - Philip Johnson Philip Johnson was. A graduated of Harvard and founded the school of architecture and design at MOMA. He was a very influential character in the architecture world for a long period of time.  Rise of the Decorator  Gina Christopher During this time period there was a high need for professional to help with outfitting the interiors of the wealthy class’s homes. Before interior decoration, architects would hire craftsmen to complete elements of the interior design. The job of an interior decorator was to furnish an interior including furniture, art, floor covering, accessories and any other aspects needed. Elsie de Wolfe is to be thanked for paving the way for women to enter the interior design profession. It is known noted that while 18 percent of architects are women 69 percent of interior designers are women. Now more than ever women are taking the lead in the field of interiors. The top 5 more famous interiors designers to date are Dorothy Draper, Francis Elkins, Petra Blaisse, Clodagh, and Laura Day. In my blog this week I will address some of these astonishing women and my favorite works of theirs.  My favorite designers/designs  Dorothy Draper ...
