Week 1
Arts and Crafts
Gina Christopher
This week focuses on the transition from the Victorian period to the arts and crafts movement. “Victorian” literally refers to anything in the decorative arts and architecture produced during Queen Victoria’s reign. Durning this time there was a shift of the industrialization of society. There was a new focus and appreciation for hand crafted products. Oak wood became a prominent building material and the clean simile style of the Japanese culture also made head way here. Simple, uncluttered designs never go out of style.
My favorite architecture/furniture/ interior design
The Orchard Residence
This home was built for the architect himself. He designed a very simple exterior and interior plan. The house fit well into the local vernacular of farm buildings.
This is a very significant Arts and Crafts building. This is a family house, but also an ongoing artistic work. The plan is an L shape with two stories and a high pitched roof.
Willow Chair
This chair caught my eye because of its simplicity and lowness. I have not seen a chair built this low yet! I like it as a short person, seems comfy. I also like how it has no arms, feels very informal.
Current applications
Modern use of wooden furniture and cabinets
Use of wood to imply simplicity and open space
Use of wood on wall and floor planes
Modern Willow Chair
One step further
Greene Brothers
The Greene brothers are architects who pioneered the California bungalow, a one-stored house with a low-pitched roof. They created this distinctive residential architecture, now known as California Craftsman. These types of houses are mostly in Pasadena. I think they feel very homey and welcoming, which drew me to dig a little bit deeper into the Greene Brothers.

Hi Gina like your one step further about the Greene brothers and what were the main characteristic about their architecture like one-stored house with a low-pitched roof is one of the traits of their buildings
